My Sony Cyber Shot T5 review
Tuesday, August 29th, 2006
The DSC-T5 has F3.5-4.4, 3X zoom Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens. The focal length of the lens is 6.3 - 19.0 mm, which is equivalent to 38 - 114 mm.
The reason I bought this baby is of course the look. Slim, petite and elegance. The only downside of the appearance is this baby get a lot of fingerprint as most of the parts are chrome type. But unfortunately it doesn’t perform or delivered well as a digicam. Here is my review after using it for almost half a year now.
First the test subject I would like to comment is a macro subject. Sony T5 does give a good job while taking a macro shot. It can take macro subject up close to 1cm. That is pretty impressive. Perfect for super close-ups shot. Thanks to the built in lens that never pop up, 1cm macro shot is possible. Colors look and everything’s smooth — no noise here. For the normal 8cm shot is great too during daytime.
Coming to the lausy part of the camera Sony T5 does a freaking lausy job with the night mode shot. The camera didn’t take in enough light due to the maximum shutter speed of 2 seconds (most of the digicam in the market are 4-5 seconds), which make things a little darker. One way to bring in more light is to increase the ISO, though that will make the photos noisy. The thing is if you never use flash at night, the subject and background are very blur and soft. If u use flash at night, then the background will all become dark but image still sharp.
The other lausy part is no matter how steady your hand maybe, it will cameout blurry and soft image for most of the night mode you caprture as well as indoor. This maybe due to the small and slim size and there is no VR function. Thus having tripod for night mode and indoor mode is a must. Small cameras mean big redeye, so I am not surprised with the results of the flash shot.
Notice that I didn’t mention common things like shutter speed, aperture, EV etc, this is because this camera is point and shoot type. So nothing much to talk about here. Only some function you can control like White Balance, Iso (Max 400), and focus type.
Coming to batteries performance, it did a pretty decent amount of shot. I am not sure how many shot it can take for a full battery but it lasted 2days for full time shooting with 256mb MSPD while I am holidaying at Kinabalu. Of course the temperature highly effecting the battery life. If the place is cold, then it will only last for a day.
Conclusion.
I love T5 for the design as it’s ultra thin compact, 2.5” LCD screen and good job for macro shot. Normal quality for daylight photo. The downside of this camera? Image are soft, super poor performance at night shot, weak flash and I always accidentally open the lens cover when I slide in my jeans pocket.
